Ako Bicol Rep. Zaldy Co gives free WIFI access in SUCs, Bicol far-flung areas

Ako Bicol party-list Congressman Zaldy Co will provide free internet access to state universities and colleges (SUCs) including far-flung areas in Bicol for the exclusive use of students and teachers to boost online learning as the education sector enters the “new normal”.

During yesterday’s launching of ‘WIFI MO, SAGOT NG AKSYON CO,’ Rep. Co said he recognizes that many Bicolano students and teachers, especially in far flung areas, lack computer devices and have limited internet access.

“Since President Duterte decided to postpone face-to-face classes until a vaccine against COVID-19 becomes available, we’re finding ways to help students and teachers overcome the myriad challenges of distance learning,” Co said.

Aside from SUCs and schools in remote areas, the lawmaker said he will also set up a “Free Wi-Fi Zone” in Embarcadero de Legazpi in partnership with the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT). The free WIFI is for students who need internet connectivity for online classes.

To ensure health and safety, the solon said the project will comply with strict guidelines of the Inter-Agency Task Force for the Management of Emerging Infectious Diseases (IATF-EID) as well as local government regulations. Physical distancing and wearing of facemasks and face shields will be strictly enforced in the free WIFI zones.

“We’re now coordinating with various LGUs and concerned agencies to lay out the plans for this free WIFI project. Our goal is to set up and increase internet connectivity which is a essential tool for students and teachers in the new normal,” Co stressed.
