AKO BICOL celebrates Feast Day of Nuestra Señora de Salvacion

Happy Feast Day to the Nuestra Señora de Salvacion, the Patroness of the Diocese of Legazpi, Albay! May she continue to shower us with blessings and keep Bicol safe from any disasters or calamities that come our way.

According to the An Kasaysayan Kan Ladawan Ni Birhen de Salvacion, Silverio Arcilla consulted the pastor of Buhi, who hired a sculptor named Bagacumba to carve out the Nuestra Señora de Salvacion out of a tree that could not be chopped down despite repeated tries. The town of Buhi lent the sculpture to the town of Joroan (part of Tiwi, Albay) and eventually, the rights to the Nuestra Señora de Salvacion were sold to Joroan for P50. Since the town of Joroan was the Muslims’ frequent target due to its proximity to the sea, the locals of Joroan prayed to the Nuestra Señora de Salvacion.

There are several miracles attributed to the Nuestra Señora de Salvacion. First, the Muslims could NOT burn down the houses of the denizens of Joroan. Second, one Hermana Mayora who was captured suddenly woke up in a forest, free from her captors. The third miracle occurred when a devotee from Catanduanes gave a candle to a lady bearing a child and saw the same candle at the chapel of the Our Lady of Salvation.

The last miracle occurred when the Muslim raiders tried to attack Joroan. They allegedly retreated after seeing a vision of heavily armed men.

In December 8, 1975, the Nuestra Señora de Salvacion was named as the patroness of Albay, and has been our patroness since then. We venerate her every August to September in her shrine in Joroan.
